On Tuesday we visited MOTAT, New Zealand's largest transport and technology museum.
We discovered how far things have come since settlers first came to New Zealand and explored the way technological development has transformed the way we live now, and will continue to impact our lives as we move towards the future.

Harakeke Flowers
This week Room 1 is celebrating Maori Language week.
Today we made Harakeke (flax) Flowers. We learned about some of the tikanga around harvesting harakeke and cut two pieces each to weave from our Sunnyhills School's supply.
While we were cutting Mrs Daniels was with her Enviro group and found a weta which we all were very interested in.
Room 1's first woven piece is to be given away to someone special in their lives.

Maths Week is here ...
Today Room 1 worked hard to solve problems together in the Survivor Series task to crack codes and in the Daily Dollar task where questions answered correctly earned dollars.
Every day this week there is a new code to crack and dollars to earn!
At the end of the week a correct code will lead to some treasure and a winner with the most dollars.
Go Room 1!

Scratch
Room 1 now have Scratch accounts through Mrs Poole's Teacher Account, a new and fantastic feature, as it lets us view and share each others work. We can 'look inside' other peoples projects to learn new skills. Leo (the expert) showed us some of the features of Scratch to get us started. Our focus was to have a 'play' and work collaboratively to gain new knowledge and skills.
If you haven't yet heard about Scratch, click here for a link to the Parents page on their website.
Scratch says on their website ...
Scratch is a programming language and an online community where children can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically - essential skills for life in the 21st century.

Genius Hour
Term 2's Genius Hour has been completed!
After presenting their projects, Room 1 reflected about their learning during Genius Hour.
Here are some of the comments:
After presenting their projects, Room 1 reflected about their learning during Genius Hour.
Here are some of the comments:
- Genius Hour taught me about teamwork
- I had lots of challenges which made me frustrated but I showed resilience to get my work done
- I learnt how to manage myself which is one of the key competencies
- I learnt lots of things from the person I was working with
- I learnt how to use a website called Vibby which I will use again
- I can't wait to do Genius Hour again, I will do things differently next time, like something that impacts on more people
Here are Room 1's Genius Hour presentations.
