Sewing Poppies

Last week ... cooking.

This week ... sewing!

Room 1 have made poppies using felt, a material that nobody had seen or used before.
We used a black button for the center of the poppy, so we learnt how to sew a button on, using a needle and cotton.
There was a small group that were keen to learn more sewing skills so worked during lunch time to sew the small poppy onto the large one. We will be using the poppies to do an art activity.

ANZAC Day

Today we had Declan C and Ryan J speak to us.

Declan C shared photos and his knowledge when he travelled to Ypres (Belgium), Arras (France), Vimy Ridge (France) and Dunkerque (France). His photos showed bunkers, tunnels, bomb holes, sniper holes, graveyards, a Canadian monument and more. Room 1 was fascinated when Declan explained how close enemy trenches were, so close that the soldiers could shout to each other!

Ryan J was interested in a discussion that Austin began about the soldier Desmond Doss. Ryan went home and read about him on the internet. He told us that Desmond Doss was an American soldier in World War 2 who was a conscientious objector so he didn't carry a gun. He was awarded America's highest award for his bravery and courage under fire. Well done Ryan J.

Yum scrum - ANZAC Biscuits

Room 1 read a story about soldiers from New Zealand receiving biscuits in food parcels sent to them from home while they were serving overseas.

The food in the parcels had to be long-lasting as it took two months to arrive on ships that didn't have refrigerators. ANZAC biscuits do not contain egg which would've gone off and were also hard to find in wartime. The biscuits were first called "soldiers' biscuits", but after Gallipoli, they were renamed ANZAC biscuits.

Our biscuits we baked today were delicious! We made six batches. Everyone ate so many that we only have one to take home, although that may not last until 3.00 pm!

ANZAC Day Learning

Room 1 have been leaning about ANZAC Day.
Today we discussed a cenotaph, what it is, where we see them and looked at images of the cenotaph on Stockade Hill in Howick.

With a buddy we chose one of the names engraved on the cenotaph and researched using the Auckland Museum's Online Cenotaph to learn more about our soldier.
We created posters to show what we discovered.

The soldiers were:
Stephen Bell
Ronald Hunter
Douglas Mason
Eric Clarke
Ernest Caddigan
Edgar Robertson
Andrew Stevenson Thompson
Jack Reeves
Edward Mcdonald
James Drake
Walter Broomfield
Henry Hulme

Did you know ... Daniel chose Jack Reeves, because he lives on Reeves Road! Room 1 were amazed at how many names connected with roads and streets in our area.
