Thinking Skills - The Hat Challenge

Year 5 students were commissioned to design a hat or fascinator that would be suitable for an audience with the Queen. It had to look good (form) and fit well (function).

The only materials our milliners were able to use were sheets of newspaper and Cellotape.

They had and hour to design and construct their creations for this most auspicious event. They had to co-operate, be innovative, and adapt their designs as they encountered technical and design-based obstacles.

Buddy Class

Gong Xi Fa Cai - Gong Hey Fat Choy - Happy New Year

Every Friday we will meet with our Room 21 buddies. We can remember when we had 'big buddies' in the Senior School and now we find ourselves being those 'big buddies'. During buddy time we will be forming positive relationships, demonstrating key competencies and being a role model.

This Friday we met with our buddy class to create an art piece celebrating the Year of the Rooster.
Instead of paint brushes we used forks to paint our masterpieces.
We all had lots of fun helping and working together.

Mihi

A mihi is a short greeting to introduce our self to other people in te reo Maori.
It is an important part of the process of meeting people for the first time.
Room 1 have been learning to write, read and present their own mihi in te reo Maori.
Our mihi includes where we come from, our nationality (iwi), mountain (maunga) and river (awa), school, age and name.

After camp, we will be working on pronunciation and the presentation of our mihi.
To know who we are, we have to know where we come from.

Values for Learning/Class Treaty

Over the last three weeks we have been getting to know each other, learning about routines and taking on jobs and responsibilities.

Room 1's Whakatauki which will guide us for the year is:

He oranga ngākau, He pikinga waiora.

Positive feelings in your heart will raise your sense of self-worth.

We discussed what our Whakatauki means to us and brainstormed values for learning for our class treaty.

Room 1's values for learning/class treaty are:

Treat others the way you want to be treated
Have a Growth Mindset
Respect others
Give everything a go
